Got RPG?

This photograph was taken some time around 1967 in Vietnam. Notice the “slats” on the deckhouse and along the sides of this modified LCM. The purpose of the “slats” was to detonate an RPG warhead away from the vital parts of the boat.

Now take a look at this photograph of one of the new Stryker vehicles taken in Iraq in 2004. Notice the so-called “slat armor” designed to detonate an RPG warhead about 18″ away from the hull of the vehicle.

It’s been almost 40 years now, and we’re still using Vietnmam era techniques to defeat what is probably the most ubiquitous anti-tank weapon in the world today.

Perhaps a little less money spent on blimps and more money spent on defeating RPG warheads would be in order.
