In Depth Reporting by ABC News – NOT!

Last night, Nightline had an interview with Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez in which Chavez said he had proof that the United States has plans to invade his country.

He even had the name of the plan, Operation Balboa.

Ted Koppel asked Chavez if he would give him the documents to prove his claim. Chavez said he could turn some of it over to Koppel, but he couldn’t tell him how he got it.

A big, secret intelligence operation, don’t you know.

Well. there’s been a lot of talk lately about how the media has got it’s backbone back, and how they are going to stop just regurgitating back to us what they are told.

It would be a pretty big deal if the United States really was planning to invade Venezuela, and unfortunately, with the record of current crowd in Washington, there is plenty of reason for folks around the world to worry about being terrorized by the United States.

This is why it is so important to have an active, engaged, and skeptical press. The whole idea of an independent press is that they are supposed to be checking up on shit to find out if what they are being told is true or not.

It took about 20 seconds to Google "Operation Balboa" and find out that it was a 2001 military exercise conducted by NATO and that this isn’t really news, as Chavez has been going around for several years claiming that the United States was involved in a coup attempt in 2002, and is planning to invade his country for the oil.

"Paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers
and foreign shot and shell."

Hugo Black (1886-1971)
