Harold S. Bachman – RIP

Harold Sherwood Bachman, the designer of the Doggie Diner heads, passed away from a heart problem at a Santa Rosa hospital on Saturday at the age of 84.

Bachman designed the Doggie Diner heads in 1965 for Al Ross, the owner of the 30 or so now defunct diners that specialized in hot dogs.

About a dozen Doggie Diner heads are still around, mostly in private hands.  The Doggie Diner head shown in the photograph is standing in the median on Sloat Avenue near Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
