Just How Far Will This Go?

Something ugly has been started here.

Don Imus has been doing goof ball stuff for years. The North Coast Curmudgeon is old enough to recall him being kicked off radio station KXOA in Sacramento in the late 1960’s.

"Hired as DJ for the Sacramento station KXOA, Imus once (in about 1969)
called a local fast-food restaurant while on the air and ordered 1,200
hamburgers to go, giving specific instructions on how he wanted them
prepared. As a result, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that
disc jockeys must identify themselves when they telephone listeners."

Then there was this in 1997:

Don Imus, the host of a talk show on radio station WFAN-AM, said
yesterday that he was ready to fight a $50,000 libel suit filed against
him on Monday by Harold J. Rothwax, a State Supreme Court judge. The
judge said he had experienced ”embarrassment, ridicule and disgrace”
because of Mr. Imus’s broadcast comments.

”The thing that the
judge doesn’t understand is that he’s a public figure,” Mr. Imus said
yesterday. ”I have a right to criticize him. And I thought I was
right.”

Does Mr. Imus still think he was right in calling the
judge, among other things, a ”senile old dirtbag” and ”Judge
Scuzwax”? ”Absolutely,” he said.

”I obviously went overboard, but I don’t think I called him anything that was out of line.”

Mr. Imus said he had hired David Boies as his lawyer.

The
dispute started in September, when Mr. Imus’s wife, Deidre
Coleman-Imus, was a fourth alternate juror in a murder case in Judge
Rothwax’s court.

Mr. Imus has said the judge treated his wife disrespectfully when she asked to be dismissed.

But still, there’s something like a lynch mob mentality going on here.

"Media Matters seems to be itching to go after others:

But as Media Matters for America has extensively documented, bigotry and hate speech targeting, among other characteristics, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and ethnicity continue to permeate the airwaves through personalities such as Glenn Beck, Neal Boortz, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Michael Savage, Michael Smerconish, and John Gibson."

If everyone who ever said anything wrong on radio and television were to go the way of Don Imus, we will find ourselves sitting around looking at test patterns and listening to Emergency Broadcast System test messages.

Just how far will this go?
