George Bush’s Purple Heart

Just when you think that things can’t possibly get any worse, George Bush has accepted a Purple Heart from one of his Texas constituents.

“History will be made today when Copperas Cove resident Bill Thomas and his wife, Georgia, present President George W. Bush with a Purple Heart at the Oval Office.

Thomas said he and his wife came up with the unprecedented idea to present the president with the Purple Heart over breakfast one morning a few months ago as they discussed the verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chief has withstood during his time in office.

We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds,” Thomas said.

The medal was awarded to Thomas on Dec. 18, 1965, following injuries he sustained while serving in heavy combat with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.

It is one of three he was awarded during his service.” (Source)

In no way do we wish to diminish what Thomas went through when he sustained his wounds in combat in the Vietnam War. But to use the Purple Heart as some sort of stunt by awarding it to a person who has accomplished nothing useful in his entire life, diminishes the true meaning of Purple Heart and diminishes all of those who legitimately earned it in combat.

And what about the Republican Congressman, John Carter, with his America Supports You poster on his website. How could a person be more hypocritical? On the one hand Carter supports the troops, on the other hand, he participates in a farce that denigrates one of the most common combat awards given in the military.

And then there’s George.

Just when you think that Republicans couldn’t express more disdain for the troops, we have the President, who, by all accounts went AWOL during the Vietnam War, presided over an unlawful invasion of a foreign country, dismissed advice from his senior officers, ruined the army, bankrupted the Navy, caused the National Guard and Reserves to collapse, tried to cut the troops combat pay, cut veteran’s benefits, contracted out for substandard services for the military, lied to the American people and Congress about almost every step in the progression of the war, getting a Purple Heart.

The Purple Heart is awarded for:

“Being wounded or killed in any action against an enemy
of the United
States or as a result of an act of any such
enemy or opposing armed
