Orlando Police Don’t Get Surface-To-Air Missile

It’s been reported all over the internets that the Orlando Police Department took in a “surface-to-air missile launcher” during their recent Orlando Police Kicks for Guns 2007 program.

But it’s not true.

The M-220 Tube-Launched, Optically Tracked, Wire-Guided Missile (TOW) is not a surface-to-air missile. It’s an anti-tank missile that went into service with the U.S. Army in the 1970’s. In it’s current configuration, it is used as a “bunker busting” missile as well as an anti-armor weapon.

What the Orlando Police traded for a shoe gift certificate is an empty, used TOW container/launcher.

This story is an excellent example of how misinformation spreads across the world. This bogus story originated with the Associated Press and can be found on the BBC, The San Jose Mercury News, countless television station and radio websites, and of course, Fox News.

To the generally uninformed media, every airplane is a bomber, every naval vessel is a battleship, and everything in a long tube is a rocket.

With all the discussion of things military, you’d think we’d have somebody in the media that knows what they’re talking about.

It’s pathetic.
