Consumer Reports Describes Questionable Subscription Services

The September, 2008 issue of Consumer Reports did a piece on “Gotcha!” subscription offers.   You can find the article on page 9 of the current issue.

They list some new names to watch out for:

Publishers Billing Emporium,  Readers Payment Services, and Periodical Billing Services.

All of these services seem to use a similar “Notice of Renewal/New order.”  The Consumer Reports article is illustrated with one of the orders.  Take a look and make sure you don’t get scammed by these people.

The story mentions Publishers Periodical Service offering some residents in certain zip codes of suburban Chicago new and renewal subscriptions to North Shore magazine for $30.00 for three years.  But since 2006, North Shore subscriptions in those zip codes have been free.  The Illinois attorney general’s office is looking into the matter.
