In The Navy

July 30, 2016

Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became openly gay person to be elected to public office in , when he won a seat on the an Francisco Board of Supervisors.

On November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone was assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned but wanted his job back.

Milk joined the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake (ASR-13) as a diving officer. He later transferred to Naval Station, San Diego to serve as a diving instructor. In 1955, he was discharged from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant, junior grade.

In July,Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, indicated he intended to name a planned Military Sealift Command fleet oiler  USNS Harvey Milk (T-AO-206). The ship would be the second of the John Lewis-class oilers being built by General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, Calif.

In certain corners of the navy, hilarity has ensued over this decision.  Here’s why:

Carly Fiorina – Epic Fail

March 13, 2010

Lest anybody forget, let’s take a trip in the wayback machine to February 10, 2005, when Carly Fiorina was fired by the Hewlett Packard board of directors.

Here’s how it was reported by CNN/Money:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – Hewlett-Packard Co. Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina, one of the most powerful women in corporate America, is leaving the troubled computer maker after being forced out by the company’s board.

Shares of HP (Research) jumped 6.9 percent in heavy trading on the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday on the news. But at one point, the stock was up as much as 10.5 percent.

“The stock is up a bit on the fact that nobody liked Carly’s leadership all that much,” said Robert Cihra, an analyst with Fulcrum Global Partners. “The Street had lost all faith in her and the market’s hope is that anyone will be better.”

Fiorina, the only female CEO at a company in the Dow Jones industrial average, had been with HP since 1999. But the company’s controversial $24 billion deal to buy Compaq in the spring of 2002 — after a bruising proxy fight led by one of the Hewlett family heirs — has not produced the shareholder returns or profits she had promised.

Her website tells us she is:

” A business leader who gets things done”

“A business executive who will solve problems”

Please remember Carly Fiorina was fired by the Hewlett Packard board.

And, we all recall what a great spokesperson she was for John McCain.
